Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such treatments must be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
